Local Spirits

The Sept of the Starlit Sky has many spirit allies and maintains a good relationship with many of the spirits of Cougar Mountain National Park. Some of the most notable spirits are...

Starlight aka "Lady Starlight": Shining down on the Caern night and day is the Caern's totem spirit for whom the sept is named. Starlight often takes the form of a beautiful woman with shining silver, dark purple, or golden hair (depending on the time of day and weather when she is summoned). Starlight is very enigmatic even for a spirit and is notorious for rarely giving a straight answers. Often her followers find that they are given a seemingly meaningless or unrelated task by their totem and wind up finding in the end that they now understand what they must do to solve their problem. Starlight is quite gentle, but when her anger is raised, she will smite her enemies with the forces of the heavens themselves!

By the banks of a small pond near the caern there resides an unlikely pair of spirits. Floating on the surface of the pond is Duck, an excitable and friendly totem. Duck spends most of her day happily swimming about in her pond and is delighted when company arrives. Prone to fits of excitement, she is quite embarrassed when she loses her cool and quacks aloud without intending to. Along the banks of the river sits Ducks unlikely companion, a coyote spirit. The trickster spirit seems quite content simply watching Duck swim in her pond and he is her stoutest friend and ally. If any would seek to harm Duck, they will find themselves the target of cruel pranks designed to teach them the error of their ways.

Grazing in the woods are several Moose spirits of male and female persuasion. These herbivorous spirits are usually quite congenial, however it is best to steer clear of the Male moose when his flesh cousins are in rut. The sept is on good terms with these noble spirits who can often be found grazing on or near the Bawn of the Caern.

The totem of the Guardian pack as well as their personal totems also make their presence known every now and again. A mated pair of Unicorns (one white and one black) reside in a specially prepared grove near the heart of the Caern. These are the personal totems of Curtis and the Guardian Pack respectively. Near Beloved-of-Aspen's home several Aspen trees are always found in full leaf even in winter. These trees are tended by a happy female Glade Child who spends all her time happily tending the trees, frolicking in their branches, and singing. Every now and then, a chill wind blows through the trees of the Caern heralding the the presence of North Wind, Totem of Seeks-The-Balance.

Aside from these spirits, many other spiritual beings have been awakened or attracted to the newly awakened caern. The only way to meet them all is to seek them out!  In the woods, there resides a hive of bee spirits that is on good terms with the caern.  The Guardian Pack is known to journey to the hive of the bees in order to barter for the spiritual honey the bees produce.  Other Unicorns are also known to live and thrive in the woods as are Stag, Rat, and wild Cockaroach spirits. Every now and then, a strange beast with no coherant form can be found conversing with Starlight. Many believe this is a manifestation of Chimera, but only Seeks-the-Balance knows for sure. Strangely for a park named after a mountain lion...there seems to be very few Cougar spirits around. There is a story behind this...perhaps one night you should ask for an explanation of why this is?
